High strength Gray cast iron is often specified without considering its brittleness. It should be known that the impact strength of Gray iron may quickly decrease as its tensile strength increases above a certain level with the addition of carbide promoter alloying elements.

When in doubt, a common practice is to use a higher strength cast iron, even though experience has proven that this often results in the opposite of the desired outcome.
